The Lychee and Dog Meat Festival in Yulin, China – when about 10,000 dogs were slaughtered and eaten over the 10 days of the festival – passed off without incident, despite animal rights’ protests.
The festival began about 10 years ago. American dog lovers said earlier this year there was now a ban on the sale of dog meat in China – which is not true. Eating dogs is not illegal in China.
The one concession to Western sensitivities is that there was far less public slaughtering of dogs this year than in the past.
