Death in gold

Illegal gold mining in central Nigeria has killed 28 children, all of them under five. They died in Niger state from lead poisoning, says the Nigerian government.

In 2010, lead poisoning in northwestern Zamfara state, which borders Niger, killed at least 400 children, and affected around 2,000 more.

The lead was used by the children to extract gold from rocks.
