Chiba Prefecture, Tokyo, has held a mass Buddhist funeral for 114 old electronic dogs. Incense smoke, a priest chanting a sutra – the works.
The ‘Aibo’ robot dogs were given their send-off by an electronics firm called A-Fun Co., which specialises in fixing vintage products.
Bungen Oi, the priest at the Kofukuji Temple in Isumi, said: “All things have a bit of soul.”
Sony started producing the first-generation Aibo in June 1999. The first batch of 3,000 sold out immediately, despite costing ¥250,000 (£1,700).
