Costa Rica has long enjoyed a reputation for being peaceful. That reputation is looking a little tarnished, given the record number of murders there in 2017, “the highest in the history of the country” according to Michael Soto, deputy director of the country’s judicial investigation agency.
Last year there were 603 murders, or 12.1 per 100,000 people. But it’s all a matter of perception. The US has a much lower murder rate, 4.9 per 100,000. Which feels the ‘safer’ place, the US or Costa Rica?
