Confirmation bias

Were there more gunshot murders in the US in 2017 than in 1994, or less? One’s instinct is to say that gun murders have been steadily climbing in the last 25 years.

But instinct isn’t always right.

In fact 2017 saw many fewer gun murders than in 1994. Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics show there were 6.2 firearm murders per 100,00 people in 1994, against 3.38 in 2017.

There was a total of 16,136 firearm murders in 1994 against 10,982 in 2017.
