China’s funerary culture

More ground shifting in China. The government has announced that it is introducing new standards of “acceptability” for nationwide broadcasting in order to stimulate what it calls “national rejuvenation”.

Banned are what the Chinese authorities deem to be part of the “four useless cultures” including: tattoo art, Hip Hop, anti-mainstream culture, and funerary culture.

“Funerary culture” has also been translated as “decadent” culture, and purportedly includes drug culture, as well as style and art that glamourises depression or anti-social tendencies.

There are four categories of performers who are ruled out from appearing:

1. actors whose heart and morality are not aligned with the party and whose morality is not noble
2. actors who are tasteless, vulgar and obscene
3. actors whose ideological level is low and have no class
4. actors with stains, scandals and problematic moral integrity
