China cremations

The authorities in China have a compulsive need to control all aspects of the lives of its citizens, including disposal of the dead. The ministry of civil affairs has announced that the aim is to see that all the dead are cremated, not buried, the aim being a 100% compliance rate by 2020.

The anti-burial movement is about saving space and being more environmentally ‘friendly’. The cemeteries in China’s big urban centres are pretty much full. In some places officious authorities have been going round districts and forcing old people to hand over their coffins, which sit in their homes, ready for the day.

Chinese people traditionally believe that burial, not cremation, is the proper way to dispose of a dead body.
