Chicago’s poor pile up

Bruce Rauner, governor of Illinois, says the American state is so poor it can’t afford to pay for pauper funerals. So he has suspended reimbursements to people who have so little money they cannot afford a funeral for the relatives.

These reimbursements are typically around $1,000.

The saving could reach almost $10 million.

Funeral industry officials say the suspension of payments will inevitably lead to delays in bodies being picked up from hospitals, nursing homes and mortuaries.

Illinois’ budget is in excess of $70 billion but it has around $6 billion of bills hanging over from 2014.
