Cannibal tree

From 29 September the Royal Academy in London is showing an exhibition of art from the South Pacfic, including a seven metre-long ceremonial food bowl.

Possibly carved from a whole tree trunk, and weighning about 250 kilos, the object has a crocodile head.

Acccording to Adrian Locke, senior curator: “There is some speculation that it was used for cannibalistic purposes.”
