Last year 2.6 million people died in the US – up 130,000 on 2010.
The dead are likely to become an ever-expanding population, as the baby boomer peak works its way through.
Among the beneficiaries of this phenomenon are shareholders in funeral companies.
Shares in the American funeral directors Service Corporation International have risen almost 30% since the start of 2015; in the UK those of Dignity, another funeral company, have gone up by more than 11% during the same period.
