Bloody Valentine’s Day

The Valentine’s Day massacre of 1929 still grabs the imagination.

Seven men were machine-gunned that day in Chicago at a nondescript garage, the culmination of more than four years of gang warfare and 38 murders in the city. The crime was never solved, although Al Capone was the major suspect.

The gang leader George ‘Bugs’ Moran told reporters “Only Capone kills like that.” Capone replied: “The only man who kills like that is Bugs Moran.”

All very small beer, compared to Chicago’s 2016 murder total of 746.
