Bless my pickled heart

The pickled heart of the composer Frédéric Chopin – removed at his own request before he died, because he was afraid of being buried alive – has since 2014 been studied by a group of experts in Warsaw.

Now they have released a report which concludes his death at the age of 39 was probably due to complications arising from tuberculosis.

The heart – enlarged, floppy, and preserved in brown liquid which is probably brandy – is contained in the crypt of the Holy Cross church in Warsaw.
