Black death in America

Academics have studied the cause of all deaths of white and black people in the US in 2015, and concluded that murder is the biggest contributor to “potential years of life lost” (PYLL), while homicide was only the 12th biggest factor for white Americans. For white Americans the number one cause of PYLL was heart disease.

PYLL, one way of calculating premature deaths, measures the number of years a person would have lived if they had not died of a particular cause.
