The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declared, from 23 January, the eastern puma extinct, and today it officially becomes a dead cat.
The last confirmed sighting in the US of an eastern puma was in…1938. That cat was trapped in Maine, killed and stuffed by a taxidermist.
Despite not having been seen for 35 years, the cat was placed on the federal list of endangered species in 1973.
News travels slowly round Washington D.C.
