According to the Medical University Cancer Institute at Hebei, which is the heavily industrialised province surrounding Beijing, the region’s lung cancer cases have more than quadrupled in the last 40 years.
Between 1973 and 2012 lung cancer cases in Hebei rose by more than 300% and accounted for almost a quarter of all cancer deaths, according to the Institute.
Hebei province is home to 74 million people, twice the size of California.
By 2012, the death rate from lung cancer in the province was 35.22 per 100,000 people. In California the rate is 33.3 per 100,000.
