According to the UN, more than 26,500 civilians have died and just under 49,000 have been injured since January 2009, the result of armed conflict. In the first six months of 2017 1,662 civilian deaths were confirmed, 2% up on the same period of 2016, according to the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
