Jurgen Kantner, 70, has finally turned up on the island of Sulu in the south-west Philippines. Minus his head.
He’d been taken hostage by Abu Sayyaf, a jihadist mob which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group.
Kanter, a German citizen, had been sailing his yacht Rockall round the Philippines. The yacht was found last November, drifting. On board was the corpse of his female companion, Sabine Merz, who had been shot.
Abu Sayyaf has been kidnapping foreigners and locals for decades and holding them for ransom. It still has 31 known hostages: 12 Vietnamese, seven Indonesians, six Filipinos, five Malaysians, and a Dutch national.
