5,130 years

The former soldier Santos Lopez Alonzo, now 66, is starting 5,130 years in jail in Guatemala having been found guilty of the massacre of 171 people in 1982.

Around 200,000 people were killed and another 45,000 disappeared during Guatemala’s 1960-1996 civil war.

The lengthy sentence is largely symbolic as the maximum sentence anyone can serve in Guatemala is 50 years.
