$100,000 brain prize

The Brain Preservation Foundation is offering $100,000 to anyone who can successfully preserve a fully functioning human brain for 100 years.

Shawn Mikula, a post-doctoral researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany, hopes to win the prize, as does 21st Century Medicine, based in California. Mikula is pursuing a chemical fixing process that he’s been testing on whole mouse brains. The 21st Century Medicine company has taken a cryopreservation approach to their technique, which infuses the brain with a fixative agent and soaked in an ice-preventing chemical.
